NURS5003 Nursing Assignment 3
Problem Statement
What it the issue? How prevalent is it? Why is it something worth addressing?
Clinical Question
As per the Assessment 2
Evidence synopsis/Recommendations for practice
Highlight the key findings from the evidence you sourced in assessment 2 that highlight/support the
change you will implement in your plan below.
NURS5003 Nursing Assignment 3

Implementation Plan (Plan Stage-PDSA) (approx. 400 word)
Your implementation plan will essentially be comprised of a mini-research proposal which will outline the details of the change you intend to make, consider the main outcome measures of success, identify key stakeholders and potential ethical considerations.

Research Project Title:
Be concise and include all the key elements. A reader should be able to review your project title and have a clear idea of what you are intending to do.
Eg: Do white noise machines, when compared with ambient noise, improve overnight sleep in patients in hospital rehabilitation settings?

Research Design and Methodology:
Use a sentence or two to describe what research design (Qualitative/Quantitative or Mixed methods) will be used and what methodology you will use within that design. Ensure there is congruence between your design and methodology. For example- do not day you will undertake a quantitative study utilising focus groups.
Eg: This quantitative research project will utilise an experimental, pretest post-test design

Stakeholder input:
What stakeholders do you need to engage to support design, implementation and evaluation of your project?
Eg: This project will engage with key stakeholders including staff from the rehabilitation unit, patients within the unit, senior management …

Outcomes of Interest:
This study will evaluate the impact of introducing white noise machines to patients in a rehabilitation unit. Outcomes of interest will be the use of white noise machines by patients and the impact on subjectively measured sleep quality and duration.

Research Plan (Do Stage-PDSA) (Approx 500 word)
Setting & Participants:
Detail the setting of interest. Detail who will be participating in your study, including any inclusion or exclusion criteria
Eg: This study will take place in a 30 bedded in patient rehabilitation ward in a public hospital within metropolitan Perth which provides care to patients undergoing rehabilitation for orthopaedic and neurological conditions.
All inpatients which meet the inclusion criteria will be invited to participate in the study. Inclusion criteria: Participants must have been inpatients of the rehabilitation unit for a minimum of three nights. Exclusion Criteria: Patients with a known sleep disorder will be excluded from participation. Patients with sever neurological impairment will be excluded.

Recruitment:
Eg: Invitations to participate will be distributed to all in patients within the rehabilitation ward by the researcher, via a study information leaflet. The researcher will be present to provide any further detail or clarity.

Intervention:
What change do you intend to introduce? Give enough detail that the reader could reproduce your
intervention.
Eg:
White noise machines refer to INSERT DEFINTION & REF.
Participants were measured on their sleep quality and quantity in the three nights preceding introduction of the white noise machine. Use of the machine was optional and volume settings could be adjusted by participants. The white noise machines were offered for five nights, with sleep quality and quantity measured each morning. Lastly, white noise machines were removed and sleep quality and quantity was measured for a further three nights.

Data collection :
What ways do you intend to collect your data. Remember- qualitative studies will gain their data via methods such as interviews or focus groups; whereas quantitative studies will gain their data via numerical data collection tools and surveys or other numerical data such as NET scores etc. Refer to the literature from assessment 2-this should guide your data collection and data analysis as you will likely model your intervention study on previous evidence you have sourced in assessment 2. Sleep quality and sleep duration will be measured via a sleep log (Appendix 1). Each morning upon wakening, participants will provide details relating to their use of the white noise machine, the quality of their overnight sleep and their sleep duration. As this study is a pretest post-test design, measures of sleep quality and duration will be collected for three nights prior to introduction of the white noise machine, throughout the five nights of the intervention and three nights post intervention.

Data analysis:
Choose an appropriate means of analysing the data set you will collect.
Refer to the resources on BB and the literature you sourced in Assessment 2

Budget & Resourcing:
Consider any budget or resourcing required to implement your change. Here you can put in a budget table or a narrative commentary. Also consider any extra staffing/education/training etc required.

Ethical Considerations (Approx 200-300 words)
Using the content covered in the Ethics module, the NHMRC guidelines and the code of ethics for
your discipline, consider any key ethical considerations your project may need to consider. Look at
the low risk ethics checklist and identify if you require ethics and whether your project would be
considered high risk or low risk ethically.

Anticipated Outcomes: (Study stage-PDSA)(approx. 200 words)
How do you intend to use the findings of your study? What are the wider implications of these findings? Was the change successful? What are your measures of success? How will you consult with stakeholders to understand barriers and enablers or any potential tweaks.
Eg: Sleep is a critical factor in repair and rejuvenation. However, patient feedback from our inpatient rehabilitation unit consistently mentions poor overnight sleep due to noise interruptions. White noise machines are inexpensive and low risk with the potential to greatly improve the sleep and therefore wellbeing and satisfaction of patients of the rehabilitation unit. If the findings illustrate an improvement in patient sleep, it is anticipated that white noise machines will be offered to all inpatients upon admission for use during the length of their stay. Prior to implementing a unit-wide change, consultation with key stakeholders will be undertaken to identify any potential barriers to successful implementation. Key stakeholders include xxxx

Evaluation plan (Act stage PDSA)(Approx 300 words)
Dissemination strategy- How will you share the findings and with whom? Official report to senior management/Preparation of a scholarly manuscript/ Team meeting
Future direction- How will these findings be translated into change? Will you alter exiting CPGs or documentation? Will process or procedures be changed? Will clinical care or decision making be impacted? Is ongoing evaluation required or larger scale roll out?
