Essay questions: 

  1. What are the implications of the UK mental health funding crisis? Critically discuss and evaluate current government interventions in mental health provision in light of key literature. 
  1. What more can be done to prevent male suicide? Discuss using relevant literature and policy. 
  1. How can the settings approach to mental health promotion in schools help improve child and adolescent mental health? Discuss using relevant literature and policy. 
  2. How does racism and discrimination affect the mental health of ethnic minorities in the UK today, and how can this be combatted? Discuss using relevant literature and policy.

Students must choose ONE essay question of the above.

Suggested structure of the assessment:

  1. Define and discuss mental health concepts, models and theories related to the chosen essay question (including but not limited to: definitions of mental health/illness, historical developments in mental health, explanatory models of mental health/illness, lay and medical views of mental health, diagnostic criteria of relevant mental illness)
  2. Provide contextual analysis of the essay topic, including relevant statistics and/or epidemiological data (including but not limited to: the extent of the issue globally/nationally, implications of the issue, health inequalities, relevant medical/psychiatric interventions and assessments)
  3. Identify and critically discuss the relevant mental health policy and the current challenges presented by the essay topic (including but not limited to: what is the relevant policy, the relevant legislation (MHA, MCA), what is being addressed in policy/legislation, what is not being addressed, how impactful is the policy, how efficient is the policy, using academic sources to support your critique)
  4. Discuss the role of values, attitudes, and ethics in mental health provision, practice and policy, as it pertains to the essay topic (including but not limited to: discrimination, stigma, self-stigma, institutionalisation, prejudice, inequality, unfairness, anti oppressive practice, healthcare workers’ attitudes and values)
