For assessment 2, you are required to submit a 3,000-word essay critically appraising a health and social care policy for its use of health creation approaches to tackle social inequalities in health.

In your essay, you would need to provide evidence of the following learning outcomes.
1) Demonstrate your knowledge and application of the social determinants of health.
2) Explain and discuss typology of initiatives to tackle social inequalities in health.
3) Discuss health creation and initiatives to tackle health inequalities from social prescribing, asset-based psychosocial, community engagement and community development, to the structural perspectives.

To help you write your essay, you would need to consider the following.
- What are the key concepts would you need to define? For example,
- What are health inequalities?
- How are health inequalities accounted for? A consideration of different approaches. From the individual lifestyle choices, the social determinants approach, the psychosocial, social ecological ife course and intergenerational and structural approach
- What is Health Creation? (See folder week 16)
- What are the different policy proposals? From legislative to redistribution.
- How can we assess the effectiveness of initiatives to address, reduce and eliminate health inequalities?

I suggest that you revisit last week’s lecture notes to help you address the above questions. They would help you to structure your essay. Your essay should contain a title, introduction in which you state the essay aim and the areas the essay will address. Address all the key areas in your introduction.

For the concept of Health Creation, the assets-based model, Salutogenic notion of health creation see pages 19 and 20. And folder week 16, the paper A Manifesto for Health Creation. You illustrate your essay with a project intervention in addressing health inequalities with a particular cohort group or individuals. It is essential that you use the typology to assess their approach, for example is it about:
Category 1: strengthening individuals or Category 2: strengthening communities.
This is where you are critically assessing the policy and intervention. This week’s independent studies should help you with the task. For example, the focus of your essay could be on Social Prescribing
